REVIEW: Marc Jacobs Shameless Youthful-Look 24H Foundation SPF25 (Light Y270)

One of the most exciting launches for me this season was the Marc Jacobs Shameless Youthful-Look 24H Foundation. Youthful-Look? 24 Hours?! I'm always up for trying out new base formulas and this one sounded great, but it fell short of expectations. I was lucky enough to be sent this foundation complimentary for review, courtesy of Influenster and Marc Jacobs Beauty.

The Marc Jacobs Shameless Foundation comes in a clear plastic squeezey-tube. The tube shows the actual color of the foundation (because it is transparent) and reveals how much product is left, which is very handy. I typically prefer pump bottles, but I really like how easy this is to dispense the product. Plus, its accident-proof plastic packaging can be brought along with you in your purse or bag for on-the-go application!

Unlike many other foundations I own, the expiration date is also printed right on the back!

The Shameless Foundation has a thin gel-like texture that's not quite as thick as your typical BB Cream, but also not as thin as a watery/serum foundation - it's somewhere in the middle. It contains SPF 25, and feels lightweight and comfortable, almost like second skin! The formula is breathable, while also providing the skin with a semi-buildable medium coverage that doesn't emphasize my fine lines or pores. It effortlessly covers minor imperfections like redness, uneven skin tone, some acne scars and blemishes though the darker/more prominent ones may need some additional coverage.

The formula is marketed as "self-setting" meaning there is no need for setting powder! I thought this was an amazing quality for any foundation and I found the claims to be generally true, but I hated this aspect. It dries down SO fast, so it makes blending really difficult. It'll keep bunching up and takes maybe 3x as long to get it to a decent stage. Once I do get it working properly, it dries down to a natural, slightly luminous finish that looks like skin. It's not completely transfer-proof once it sets, but you can achieve that with some extra powder.

Another positive note is that both powders and creams layer on top of this foundation very beautifully. I can apply cream blush without lifting up the foundation underneath and powder products go on very smoothly and seamlessly.

I received the shade Light Y270 and it's a perfect shade match on my light-medium skin tone! I have slight warm and yellow undertones and this blends right into my skin.

There are a few major setbacks to this foundation, unfortunately. Though the Shameless Foundation does not emphasize my pores or fine lines, it DOES emphasize my dry flakes by bunching up around the edges. It enlarges dry areas I didn't even know I had! I've tried a number of hydrating moisturizers underneath this foundation, but nothing seems to work. If you have any kind of dry skin, I'd say pass on this!

Another gripe with this foundation is that it applies very patchily, even despite extra care in moisturizing and prepping the skin.

I found that the best way to apply this foundation is with a damp beauty sponge. The water in the sponge mixes with the foundation helping it apply more smoothly than other application methods (i.e. brushes or fingers).

Here you can see that it's patchy on this side of my cheek where I applied it with a brush.

The photo below shows the side I applied with a damp beauty sponge. The coverage is stronger and the patchiness isn't as bad, but there's still some uneven areas here and there.

HOWEVER, the strange thing is that after 30 minutes to 1 hour of wear time, the foundation mixes really well with my natural oils and transforms into this beautiful natural skin-like finish. The patchiness disappears and it looks much more flawless than it did upon initial application.

I'm not sure what strange sorcery this is, but for a high end foundation, I'd expect it to look good from the get-go. Despite that, I've fallen for this foundation since the final look is luminous and "youthful".

As for wear-time, I don't think this would last 24 hours as claimed, and I don't have the means to actually wear/test this for 24 hours. After 8 hours of wear, the foundation is still intact on my skin with very little fading on some of my blemishes. Not much has settled into my pores or fine lines. This is a foundation that turns more beautiful on my skin the longer I have it on!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Initially, I was pretty disappointed with the Marc Jacobs Shameless foundation. It applies patchily on the skin and emphasizes dry areas. The foundation works fairly decent with a sponge but the problem areas still remain, though not as prominent. I've noticed that the longer you have this foundation on, the more natural and seamless this foundation looks. It looks just like skin, but with very decent cake-free coverage! I started noticing its improvement after about an hour of wear, and it lasts 8+ hours on me. For a high-end foundation like this, I expect it to be flawless from the start. It's not one of my favorite foundations, but it's not horrible either. If you have dry skin though, I'd recommend passing on this!
