REVIEW: Moonshot Cream Paint #102 Candy Stick, #103 Strawberry Gelato, #804 Dragon Fruit, #808 Orange Souffle

If you had asked me what the #1 Korean makeup brand I've been dying to try was, I'd say it's Moonshot in a heartbeat (and JUNGSAEMMOOL, definitely). Moonshot has always been one of those brands I've always lusted after. It's partly because of the aesthetic/marketing, but mostly because G-Dragon was once the brand ambassador. Uh hello, G-Dragon could sell me dirt and I would still buy it!

Despite being launched a few years ago, Moonshot remains a brand that is not easily accessible online. My boyfriend gifted me these shades which he purchased from StyleKorean, but I do not (I REPEAT, I DO NOT) recommend shopping at StyleKorean at all. I have a lot to say about this store and will probably save it for a future store review. Long story short, expect poor customer service, unresponsiveness, and the possibility of expired or close to expiring products. Anywho, lets get on with the review and swatches!

MOONSHOT CREAM PAINT

The Moonshot Cream Paint is advertised as a "multi-use lip and cheek cream paint" with a soft, creamy, and blendable texture.  There are two available variations of the formula: matte and glossy. The matte formula is supposed to be moisturizing with a luminous powdery finish, while the glossy shades have a high shine glossy finish!

The Cream Paint by Moonshot comes in a clear rectangular bottle with a twist-off cap. The applicator is a very FAT doe-foot paddle that's designed to mimic a finger applying the product. Frankly, the applicator is very unique for a lip tint, but I think it was designed to be able to be used on the lips as well as the cheeks.

I appreciate the flexibility of the paddle, but the huge shape makes it really difficult to apply the product onto the lips. The edges are round so it's hard to get deep into the corners of my lips without accidentally applying product all over the side of my mouth.

However, the huge doe-foot paddle does work well for dabbing the product onto the cheeks or lips, but not for application.

The Cream Paint comes in two different formulas: matte and glossy. Shades #102 Candy Stick and #103 Strawberry Gelato have the matte formula while #804 Dragon Fruit and #808 Orange Souffle have the glossy formula.

The matte formula has a strange texture, that unfortunately, I am NOT a fan of when it comes to lip products. It is a thick, gloopy mixture that seems to initially have the smoothness of a gloss and an easy application of a liquid lip, but it fails miserably as it dries to a big mess. Many of the shades have a fairly quick dry-down time that makes these appear uneven and patchy when applied. Despite being advertised as having a "luminous powdery" finish, these matte shades were not luminous nor moisturizing.

On the other hand, the glossy formula (#804 Dragon Fruit and #808 Orange Souffle) was the high-shine pigmented gloss of my dreams with no complaints.

Despite working horrible as a lip product, the matte Cream Paints excelled as cream blush while the glossy version was unsettling. This is due to the fact that the glossy Cream Paints had a much tackier formula than the matte version and made it feel 'icky' on the cheeks while the matte Cream Paints resulted in a soft airbrushed finish that truly is a "luminous powdery" matte.

The Cream Paints also have a sweet vanilla scent that dissipates once it is applied.

#102 CANDY STICK

Candy Stick is a bright bubblegum pink with a milky white base. This particular shade has no shimmers or glitters in the formula. I wanted to love this so bad, but the formula for this shade was horrible on my lips. It was patchy and uneven. It clung to every dry patch imaginable even AFTER I exfoliated my lips (it's hard to tell in the photo). The color is bright and gorgeous, but it emphasized everything I didn't want to show. However, as a cream blush, this shade wore nicely and gave a soft diffused flush.

#103 STRAWBERRY GELATO

Strawberry Gelato is a warm coral pink that pulled mostly coral on my lips. It has a glossier finish than Candy Stick, but still not as glossy as the next two hues. As far as a lip product, this is a big improvement from Candy Stick and went on much smoother. This particular shade felt thicker like a lip lacquer making it easier to apply. It did also cling to some dry patches but it wasn't terribly noticeable.

#804 DRAGON FRUIT

Dragon Fruit is a bright reddish pink that reminds me of the color of fruit punch. It has a high shine glossy finish with strong pigmentation and opaque coverage. It applies smoothly and evenly and there's zero complaints with this one. This particular shade is just deep enough that it leaves behind a subtle ink stain. As a blush though, this felt much tackier on the cheeks and I prefer this as a lip product only!

#808 ORANGE SOUFFLE

Orange Souffle is a orangey coral with gold microglitter all throughout. This is the only shade out of the 4 that has glitter in it. The formula is semi-sheer with a glossy high shine finish. It applies a bit unevenly and patchily, but it is not discernible to the eye when compared to the lighter hues. The formula pales in comparison to Dragon Fruit, but is a huge step up from Candy Stick and Strawberry Gelato.

Because of the creamy texture, the Cream Paints are not transfer-proof especially for the gloss formula. I felt that these were very high maintenance (on the lips) and rubbed off easily. I was only able to get maybe two hours of wear time with the shades before I felt the need to touch up. However, as a cream blush these lasted 6+ hours on me and kept their vibrancy for hours on end. I would be careful to set the cream blush with powder to help eliminate the tacky feeling for shades 804 Dragon Fruit and 808 Orange Souffle since these had a glossier finish to them. On the other hand, 102 Candy Stick and 103 Strawberry Gelato dried down to a more radiant soft matte finish on the cheeks.

FINAL THOUGHTS

All in all, I'm so incredibly disappointed in these products! Moonshot is still a brand I'm interested in trying more things from, but these products were a fail for me. They just weren't what I was expecting from this middle to higher end brand. I disliked the matte formula, but adored the glossy Cream Paints. I highly recommend #804 Dragon Fruit. I think the shade works well with the formula to give a bright glossy and juicy looking lip.
