REVIEW: DAENG GI MEORI Oriental Special Shampoo

I'm such a huge fan of K-beauty (Korean beauty) products including everything from makeup to skincare, but I have yet to venture out deeply into the world of Korean haircare. I've been very low-maintenance when caring for my hair, so it always a nice surprise to be receiving a new shampoo in my BNT Box and give my hair some special treatment!

Today, I'll be reviewing the DAENG GI MEORI Oriental Special Shampoo and to my surprise, I already knew about this shampoo even before I received it! I'm a huge Korean drama addict and one of my favorite K-dramas, Fated To Love You, featured this shampoo in one of their episodes. :D

As you can see, the hilarious Jang Hyuk is seen here using the shampoo for his own commercial; anyone else obsessed with his crazy laugh?! LOL

This shampoo brought back so many fond memories of Fated To Love You, so of course I couldn't wait to jump in the shower and use it!

WHAT'S THE DAENG GI MEORI ORIENTAL SPECIAL SHAMPOO?

The DAENG GI MEORI Oriental Special Shampoo is made to help protect and soften the hair. The shampoo contains more than 35% of ripe and enriched medicinal ingredients as well as special patented lily extracts. It is chock full of nutritional vitamins and minerals like caulerpa racemosa extracts, antioxidative chlorella, and fermented Pseudoalteromonas to help protect and deeply nourish the scalp.

Wilfordii root, false daisy, and hazelnut extracts energize and gives vitality to exhausted and dry scalps. This shampoo also contains keratine and camelia which helps treat damaged scalps from the inside out and reinforcing its elasticity. The natural surfactant in this shampoo makes it non-irritable.

REVIEW

The DAENG GI MEORI Oriental Special Shampoo I received came with two shampoo bottles. One was a big bottle with a pump that was 500ml and a travel-sized squeeze bottle with a twist-off cap that was 145ml.

I was expecting the smaller bottle to be a conditioner for the shampoo, but I was disappointed to find out that it's just a travel-sized version of the shampoo! I think the shampoo set would have been complete if there was a conditioner included because I definitely need that extra boost of softness and silkiness when using this shampoo! I'll explain more in detail below about how it worked for me after I describe the shampoo itself.

The Oriental Special Shampoo comes in a unique dark almost blackish-green plastic bottle of shampoo. The shampoo bottle design perfectly symbolizes the "oriental" and old school look. It incorporates a vintage gold colored plastic neck and a black pump with a long narrow nozzle. The bottle also comes with a very fancy looking vintage gold pump stopper (that has the words: "DAENG GI MEORI" in Korean characters on it) making it possible to bring the shampoo around for trips if you didn't want to bring along the travel-sized version!

The shampoo has a very distinctive scent; it smells like a strong mix of oriental herbs and florals. This scent may not be pleasing for everyone and I was definitely taken aback at first because it was definitely strong and very oriental. I've grown used to this scent after a few days and it doesn't bother me anymore, but it's for sure not a scent that I would prefer if I had a choice.

The Oriental Special shampoo is a brown maple colored shampoo that lathers extremely easily and foams up well. I use about 3 full pumps to get a decent handful because I have extremely long hair (almost all the way down my back)! What I love about this shampoo is that it was very refreshing and relaxing on my scalp and my hair. The shampoo makes my hair feel super clean like all of the hair products, grease, oils, etc. just disappears once I rinse this shampoo out of my hair. However, I also felt like this was a con; my hair felt TOO clean making it feel slightly striped, therefore also making it tangle-prone.

It's recommended to not use other hair products when using this treatment shampoo, but I actually have to disagree. There wasn't much silkiness in my hair and I thought that this is seriously a shampoo that needs a conditioner to follow up after it in order to restore some nourishment and added softness back into the hair.

I didn't see a big difference in the softness of my hair compared to other shampoos I have used previously, but I have always used a conditioner with my products which makes my hair feel silky and smooth and I couldn't achieve that silkiness and softness with the shampoo alone.

Overall, this is the shampoo I always go for when I've used a lot of hair products in my hair that weigh it down. This is THE shampoo I always depend on for a deep clean, but I always be sure to follow up with a conditioner so my hair doesn't end up tangled.

PROS

Lathers easily/foams well
Feels relaxing and refreshing
Removes grease, hair products, oils, etc. extremely well
Deep clean

CONS

Strips hair of natural oils
Strong scent
Lots of tangles
Needs follow-up conditioner (for me at least!)

RATING: 3.5/5

I wish this was a more well-rounded product that did wonders for my hair. It's excellent at cleansing it, but didn't work so well in making it softer than it usually is.

  1. Why did you post a picture of Jang Hyuk and his abs?! I couldn't even scroll down to read the rest of your review for a good minute, hahaha!

I agree, the packaging is wow worthy! I find the scent tolerable, but just like yourself, I was taken aback when I first smelt it.

Do you think you can write up a post on your photography set up? I love your pictures!!

    1. HAHAHA, I just HAD to show the him holding the shampoo bottle ;)

I'm glad you agree! I thought I was the only one that didn't love the scent that much. I definitely like the floral scents, but it wasn't strong enough to combat the oriental herbs.

Aw thank you so much :D but there's really not much to say LOL. I honestly just use poster board and natural sunlight! I've been meaning to upgrade to real photography lights and one of those white boxes for photos, but I just don't know which one to settle on yet. Let me know how you take your photos too because they always turn out gorgeous! <3
